The Dangerous Comfort of Planning

· Ludhiana, Punjab · India

This is awkward, I decided I wanted to write. So, I thought I should start writing essays which will help make my thoughts clear, resulting in a sharper mind and better understanding of me, so I ended up discussing it with ChatGPT and Claude and even though I didn’t put a single thing on paper I felt productive. Output 0, dopamine 100%. And this has been an issue, planning to do the thing gives as much or even more energy as doing the thing, mostly because from what I gather brain gives up loan on the achievement early while we plan. And takes it back when we do achieve that which results in feeling of underachievement at that moment, the cycle repeats and at least I get the feeling that meh it was bound to happen.

Planning is useful I am not saying otherwise. But not starting because at some point it has become more fun and more fulfilling than the real work that’s where the dangers lie. It's like being a caterpillar the plan is the cocoon, warm nourishing but the real work begins once the cocoon is off, and yes, I know the cocoon took time too but in the end, it was just a cocoon. It comes with a time limit. The next step has to be taken for the work to be done.

So, is there an escape? Can we avoid getting stuck in this phase? What's the solution you ask. It's simple, do the damn thing. yes, I know shocking revelation but that’s the truth doing is the only escape. This essay is the example of that, I tried to feel productive while discussing my plans for wanting to start writing, but had no work to show for it. Now I have a 300-word block of text making me feel dumb but hey at least I got something new out. And hopefully with time and practice I become better and that is the plan I want to stick to in the end.
